WASHINGTON – A $12 million U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER grant has been awarded to the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) to develop an Intermodal Container Transfer Facility to integrate shipping containers with the national railroad system, Congressman Jo Bonner, R-Alabama, announced Tuesday.

The federal grant, together with ASPA matching funds, will be used to develop the Garrows Bend Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF), enabling the Port of Mobile to meet a growing national demand for more cost effective delivery of both imports and exports.

“The award of this significant federal transportation grant to the Alabama State Port Authority will ensure the Port remains positioned for continued growth and expansion, with the improvements in rail connectivity expected to add more than 680 jobs over the next decade,” Congressman Bonner said.

“I was pleased to support this grant request to bolster the capability and prominence of the Port of Mobile as a vital link in international trade and a catalyst for economic development in our region.”

The TIGER grant program is competitively awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and does not include funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
