A group of Birmingham City Police officers made a surprise visit to the son of Wytasha Carter, a police sergeant who was killed in 2019 while responding to a call at a nightclub.
The gesture went viral after the Birmingham Police Department posted it to social media, garnering more than 3,300 reactions.
The policemen reportedly gave the teenager, who was turning 16, a bag full of gifts.
A suspect in the killing of Sergeant Carter, Jeremy Owens, has been indicted on multiple charges including capital murder and could face the death sentence.
He has also been charged with attempted murder for injuring officer Lucas Allums and Sergeant Talana Brown.
“Sgt. Carter is missed beyond measure and his family will always be part of the BPD family. Thank you for your service,” wrote the Birmingham Police Department on Facebook.
Carter was 44 years old at the time of his passing and had been with the department since 2011.
“Sgt Carter lived his purpose and he is in a better place and although it hurts to say, he would not come back to this world even if given chance. It is us left behind that should hope that we will intentionally live out our PURPOSE on this earth,” wrote his wife, Tiphanie, on Facebook to mark one year since his passing.
