Birmingham letting mandatory mask rule lapse Friday night

The City of Birmingham is letting its mandatory mask ordinance expire on May 29 at midnight, according to a statement from Mayor Randall Woodfin.

Mask wearing became required in Birmingham on May 1, when the rule went into effect, and Woodfin believes “[t]he ordinance raised the level of awareness to the importance of wearing a face covering.”

During work hours, city employees and visitors to city facilities will still be required to wear masks.

“[W]e must not let our guard down. Public health leaders say covering your nose and mouth is a critical tool to help reduce the spread of coronavirus,” continued Woodfin.

“I urge everyone to keep social distancing, wear face coverings in public, and do what you can to limit the spread,” concluded the mayor.
