A former Birmingham hotel with 122 rooms was approved for a $9.2 million remodel permit this week in order to transform it into veterans housing.

The property — a Spark by Hilton Birmingham Colonnade just off US 280 and near The Summit — was purchased by the nonprofit Tunnel to Towers for $11 million last fall, according to ALdotcom. Upon purchasing, the goal was to make 110 rooms with “stable housing [and] onsite access to life-changing services” for veterans.

“The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is excited to announce its plans to transform this former hotel into a beautiful and dignified home for approximately 110 veterans in the Birmingham area,” said Sr. Vice President of the group’s Homeless Veteran Program Gavin Naples, back when the purchase was made.

“Tunnel to Towers is committed to making sure no veteran is left behind on the streets they helped protect. We are honored to work alongside local leaders to bring hope and healing to veterans here.”

Known as Birmingham’s Veteran Village, the goal for the project is for it to open by the end of 2027.
