Auto supplier Mobis building facility in Jefferson County, creating 120 jobs

Automotive parts supplier Mobis is building a plant in Jefferson County that will employ 120 workers.

Mobis, a wholly-owned subsidiary of car manufacturer Hyundai, is investing $15.8 million in the project. It is Mobis’ second location in Alabama. The other is located near the Hyundai plant in Montgomery.

“Mobis is excited about opening its second facility in Alabama, this time utilizing the great workforce in the Jefferson County area,” said James Jeon, a Mobis executive, in a statement provided by the Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA).

The new Mobis plant will be located in the Jefferson County Metropolitan Industrial Park near McCalla, a small town in the southwest corner of Alabama’s most populous county.

“Jefferson County is proud to be the home of another reputable automotive supplier,” remarked Jefferson County Commissioner Steve Ammons in a release, adding that the “creation of these 120 jobs continues to prove that Jefferson County is a key player in Alabama’s automotive industry.”

Specific details on the project’s timeline have not yet been made public, but the company has disclosed that the 120 jobs the facility will create is the employment target for three years after the plant comes online.

The BBA says it began working with Mobis on plans for an expansion in 2018.

“This project, when operational, will provide impacts beyond those in jobs and investment and put our region closer to building a cluster of next-generation automobile technologies and manufacturers,” offered Brian Jennings vice president of economic development at the BBA.
