APLS Chair wants close ‘loophole’ that allows transgender books in the children’s section of Alabama libraries

The Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) board chairman John Wahl wants to make sure that kids’ books pushing radical gender ideology are only available in the adult sections of public libraries in the Yellowhammer State.

Wahl, who is also the Alabama Republican Party Chairman, issued a formal letter to public library directors across the state earlier this year, informing them that the APLS Board will stand behind President Trump’s executive order banning the use of federal funds to promote gender ideology.

Wahl explained on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program” Thursday that some libraries are using a “loophole” in the code to keep some of the inappropriate books in the children’s sections.

“The APLS board made a code change back last year and said you have to move sexually explicit obscenity and other material deemed inappropriate for children,” Wahl said. “Well, most libraries have used that as a loophole to say, well, transgender things are not necessarily directly sexually explicit, and there’s an argument of whether it’s inappropriate for children or not.”

Wahl said they’re currently going through the process to make sure all books promoting radical gender ideology will be moved to the adult sections.

“So we’re coming back,” he continued. “We actually are in the middle of a public comment period. We just finished a public comment period, and then we’re going to have a public hearing next Tuesday where the board is coming back and we’re going to close that loophole. We’re going to say, ‘No, this transgender stuff should not just be buried.’ Unelected bureaucrats should not be able to make the decision of what your children are exposed to when it comes to encouraging transgender procedures.”

The chairman said this is really about empowering parents by giving them more control over what their children see at the library.

“This should be the parents, and we’re going to we’ll make a rule that says, ‘No, all of it has to be moved to the adult section, and the parents will decide whether their children have access to it or not.’”
