A 19-year-old Amazon employee was fatally shot Sunday night in the parking lot of an Amazon fulfillment center in Bessemer, according to local authorities.
Bessemer police said officers were dispatched to the facility on Powder Plant Road around 10:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Tyler Neil Alexander, 19, of Birmingham. The coroner said Alexander sustained gunshot wound injuries during a reported assault and that his death is being investigated as a homicide.
Police confirmed Alexander was employed at the Amazon facility. Investigators said no arrests have been made and it remains unclear whether the person or people responsible were also employees at the warehouse.
In a statement released to media, Amazon said it is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
“We’re deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless act of violence and are focused on supporting our employees during this time,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “We’re working with the Bessemer Police Department in their active investigation.”
Amazon said the remainder of the overnight shift was canceled after the shooting and employees were sent home with pay once law enforcement cleared the scene.
Day-shift operations on Monday were also canceled, with employees being compensated for the missed time. The company said counseling resources will be made available to employees when they return to work.
Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the Bessemer Police Department or Crime Stoppers. The investigation remains ongoing.
