As Alabamians prepare to celebrate Labor Day weekend and the kickoff of college football season, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is reminding drivers and boaters to “Score Big with Safety” both on the road and on the water.
Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol Divisions will increase their presence throughout the state, conducting checkpoints, LIDAR operations, and waterway patrols to deter dangerous behaviors and ensure a safe holiday.
“Labor Day is traditionally one of the busiest weekends on our roads and waterways, and with the beginning of football season, excitement will be at an all-time high,” ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said.
“We want everyone to start the season with a win by making smart choices. Please buckle up, drive sober and stay alert so you can enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly.”
Roadway safety tips
-
Celebrate responsibly: Plan for a safe ride before consuming alcohol.
-
Buckle up: Seat belts save lives, no matter how short the trip.
-
Put the phone down: Reading or sending a text at 55 mph is like driving a football field blindfolded.
-
No tailgating: Keep the tailgating fun at the stadium, not on the highway.
Waterway safety tips
-
Know the rules: Follow posted regulations and No-Wake zones.
-
Wear a PFD: Life jackets remain the best defense against sudden hazards.
-
Boat sober: Alcohol and boating don’t mix.
-
Stay alert: Watch for swimmers, paddleboarders, and pop-up summer storms.
To further enhance coastal safety, ALEA will deploy its helicopter for the annual Rescue Swimmer Detail, in partnership with Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Fire Departments.
The operation will monitor the Gulf Coast, providing rapid response to swimmers in distress and covering areas beyond lifeguard patrols.
“Our mission is to keep every individual safe, whether you’re traveling to a tailgate, cruising on a boat or enjoying the beach,” said Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety. “We urge everyone to play it safe this weekend by making smart decisions and following the rules, so the holiday ends with great memories — not tragedy.”
ALEA encourages Alabamians to follow @ALEAProtects on social media for real-time traffic updates and additional safety information throughout the weekend.
