ALDOT warns of hazardous driving conditions during severe winter weather

With temperatures approaching zero in north Alabama to 20 degrees on the Gulf Coast this week, the Alabama Department of Transportation is monitoring the potential for severe winter weather to create hazardous conditions across the Yellowhammer State.

In areas anticipated to experience the most severe conditions, ALDOT said its personnel are monitoring forecasts and roadway conditions with equipment prepared to pretreat roads this weekend if conditions allow. Crews are prepared to treat roads following any wintry precipitation.

The effectiveness of any pretreatments may be diminished in areas where rain precedes or is mixed with wintry precipitation, ALDOT said.

ALDOT said its goal is to keep state, U.S. and interstate highways safe and open. The agency’s crews prioritize interstate routes and then other routes by traffic volume. ALDOT maintains state, U.S. and interstate highways. Check with local government agencies for conditions on city or county roads.

Motorists are advised to avoid travel if snowy or icy conditions develop. With temperatures expected to remain below freezing across much of Alabama for several days, any moisture on roadways may freeze.

Prepare your vehicle by having a full tank of gas and an emergency supply kit containing a phone charger, ice scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, blankets, non-perishable food, bottled water and any other critical supplies.
