Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham has been recognized nationally for its performance and service, earning the “Troon Golf Facility of the Year – East” award at the 2025 Troon Global Leadership Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The conference, held November 18–20, brought together more than 520 Troon associates, including managers from 209 affiliated facilities. A total of 10 properties across the company’s network were honored for excellence in operations and guest/member service.
Highland Park, the oldest public golf course in Alabama, is no stranger to accolades. It was previously named in GOLF Magazine’s list of the “30 Best Municipal Golf Courses in America.” The property is owned by the City of Birmingham, leased long-term to Highland Park Golf, LLC, and managed by Troon.
Troon Executive Vice President of Operations Matt Hurley praised the Birmingham team for its long-standing commitment to quality.
“Congratulations to the team at Highland Park Golf Course on your well-deserved recognition,” Hurley said. “Highland Park continues to be a proud pillar in the Birmingham community, thanks to the culture of service and hospitality the team has created. Your commitment to excellence sets a standard we are honored to celebrate within the Troon family.”
The 2025 conference, themed “Building Greatness with Purpose,” featured keynote speakers, special guests, — including 2025 U.S. Open Champion JJ Spaun — group training sessions and company updates. Troon, a global leader in golf and club-related hospitality, manages more than 575 18-hole equivalent golf courses worldwide.
Highland Park Golf Course dates back to 1903, when it was originally designed by Nick Thompson.
The course has seen several rounds of improvements, including a major renovation in 1998 by Honours Golf Founder Bob Barrett and architect Bob Cupp, followed by updates in 2019–2020 focused on bunkers and putting surfaces.
Over the years, it has welcomed notable visitors like Bobby Jones, Theodore Roosevelt and Tiger Woods.
The par-70, nearly 5,900-yard layout, challenges golfers with elevation changes, creeks, lakes and small greens that demand precision. A recently added back tee on the par-4 15th hole gives players a sweeping view of the Birmingham skyline from the property’s highest point.
