Alabama watches more zombie television than any other state

Alabamians really love zombies…as long as they’re on television, that is.

A study by HomeSnacks recently found that the one show that Alabamians binge watch more than anything else is AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” The state actually leads the nation in online viewing of the show. The Walking Dead, which is filmed in the neighboring state of Georgia, is currently in its sixth season, and is one of the most popular and highest-rated shows on television right now. The first five seasons are currently on Netflix.

Binge watching has become the new national pastime. With the rise of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, online streaming has completely changed the way we watch television. Why wait a week between episodes when you can watch all 144 episodes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” right now? And Netflix’s original series like “Orange is the New Black,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” and “Jessica Jones” are changing the game for both drama and comedy.

According to Nielsen, the company that still tries to measure how many people watch shows live on TV, almost 45% of American households subscribe to at least one online streaming service. And that does not consider “account sharing” (one person pays and other friends or family use the account for free).

The study by HomeSnacks used Google Trends and search results to determine what shows are being Googled and streamed the most in every state. The results are incredibly varied. While Alabamians prefer “The Walking Dead,” Indiana loves Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” South Dakotans have clear eyes and full hearts watching “Friday Night Lights,” and apparently the current state of politics isn’t dramatic enough for Maryland, because they’re busy watching “House of Cards.”

Some of the results seem a little too obvious. “Portlandia” is the most-streamed show in Oregon, Pennsylvanians are fans of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and Tennessee understandably loves “Nashville.”
