Alabama Sheriffs Association names St. Clair County Sheriff Billy J. Murray as its next president

St. Clair County Sheriff Billy J. Murray has been sworn in as the new president of the Alabama Sheriffs Association. The ceremony took place Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in Sheriff Murray’s 32-year career in law enforcement.

Murray began his career in 1992 with the Springville Police Department before joining the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office in 1996. Over the years, he held various leadership roles, including Assistant Sheriff and Undersheriff, before being elected Sheriff in 2018. A graduate of both the National Sheriffs’ Institute and the FBI National Academy, he has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to professional development in law enforcement.

In his new role, Murray will be working alongside law enforcement officials statewide to enhance public safety and strengthen community relationships.

A dedicated community servant, Murray is a member of the Rotary Club of Pell City and a graduate of Leadership St. Clair County. His belief in community involvement is reflected in his statement: “A Sheriff must be heavily involved in the community he serves.”

Murray’s predecessor in the Alabama Sheriffs Association, retired Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Hoss Mack, has praised the new president’s dedication and leadership and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the organization effectively.

In addition to his new role as President of the Alabama Sheriffs Association, Sheriff Murray also serves as the President of the FBI National Academy Associates, Alabama Chapter, and the Alabama Sheriffs Foundation. His leadership extends beyond law enforcement, as he has been actively involved in numerous community organizations, including Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama and the St. Clair Health Care Authority. He is also the past president of the St. Clair Day Program, St. Clair FOP, and St. Clair Children’s Advocacy Center.
