Alabama shoppers will be able to stock up on severe weather preparedness supplies without paying state sales tax during a three-day holiday set for February 20–22, 2026.

The Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, February 20, and runs through midnight Sunday, February 22. During that time, qualifying emergency supplies can be purchased free of the state’s 4% sales tax. Many cities and counties also participate by waiving local sales taxes, increasing total savings.

The annual tax holiday is intended to encourage Alabama families to take proactive steps to protect their homes and prepare for the state’s frequent severe weather threats.

This year’s event features expanded exemption limits after lawmakers approved legislation during the 2025 session to modernize Alabama’s sales tax holidays. The measure increased dollar thresholds and indexed them to the Consumer Price Index, resulting in higher exemption caps for 2026 purchases.

Under the updated limits, shoppers may purchase severe weather preparedness supplies priced under $94 per item tax-free, along with portable generators and power cords priced under $1,564 without state sales tax. In prior years, the caps were $60 for supplies and $1,000 for generators.

“By updating these exemption limits to better reflect today’s costs, lawmakers ensured that this sales tax holiday continues to provide meaningful savings for Alabama families,” said Alabama Retail Association President Rick Brown. “These changes help consumers purchase the items they need while also supporting Alabama retailers in their local communities. A true win-win.”

Retailers across the state are encouraging residents to plan ahead and review eligible supply lists before the weekend begins.

“Recent severe weather across Alabama has been a reminder that preparation can make all the difference,” said David Majure of Southeast Ace Hardware. “This tax-free weekend helps families afford critical supplies, and our stores are ready to help customers find the right products to protect their homes and loved ones.”

Eligible items include flashlights, batteries, weather radios, first-aid kits, tarps, and other qualifying preparedness supplies, along with portable generators and related equipment. A full eligibility list and participating local jurisdictions are available through the Alabama Department of Revenue.
