ALABASTER, Ala. — Alabama Senator Cam Ward appeared before a judge Wednesday in Alabaster Municipal Court to pled guilty to driving under the influence.
Ward was arrested in July for driving while intoxicated on Thompson Road in Shelby County.
WSFA reports Ward has been ordered to do the following:
- Pay a $2,400 fine
- Have an interlock device on his vehicle he’ll have to blow into to start it, which comes with a monthly fee that will total $2,500
- Complete a defensive driving class
- Do 48 hours of community service
- Undergo random alcohol testing twice a month for six months
Ward’s court-mandated testing for alcohol will end after six months, though the Alabama Bar Association is also requiring the state senator be randomly tested twice a month for three years and attend a monitoring class three times a month.
Ward was first elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 2002 and served two terms before being elected to the Senate in 2010. He was elected to a second term in the Senate last November. He also serves as Executive Director of the Alabaster Industrial Development Board, a post he has held since 2001.
His profile in the Senate had risen significantly in recent years as he became Chairman of the influential Senate Judiciary Committee. His name had frequently come up in discussions about possible 2018 attorney general candidates.
