Alabama releases 2019 list of ‘failing’ schools

Alabama education officials have released the 2019 list of schools labeled as “failing” because of low test scores.

Seventy-six schools were labeled as failing on the list released last week by the Alabama Department of Education. The schools scored in the bottom six percent of standardized test scores for reading and math.

Parents of students enrolled in schools labeled as failing can request a transfer to another public school.

The 2013 Alabama Accountability Act sets the criteria for what is considered a failing school.

As in past years, the 2019 list is dominated by high-poverty schools.

The list of failing schools can be found on the department’s website.
