Alabama recognizes 10th anniversary of April 27, 2011 tornadoes

Governor Kay E. Ivey has proclaimed Tuesday, April 27, as a Day of Remembrance across the state of Alabama, marking the 10th anniversary of the infamous 2011 severe weather that struck the state.

On that day a decade ago, a series of long-track tornadoes tore through Alabama in three waves across 35 of the state’s 67 counties. The unprecedented event claimed the lives of 254 Alabamians, injured more than 2,000 and devastated the state.

A release from Ivey’s office noted, “While we will never forget the grave loss of life and devastation, we also reflect on how far we have come.”

Ivey has directed flags to be displayed at half-staff on Tuesday to commemorate the anniversary.

“Over the last 10 years in the aftermath of this horrific tragedy, Alabamians have proven their strength and resiliency in rebuilding their broken communities,” Ivey wrote in a memo. “[On Tuesday], I encourage all Alabamians to reflect upon the memory of those we lost and uplift their loved ones that continue to grieve.”

The governor also released a video message for the day.
