Alabama families looking for STEM activities for their children may soon have a new way to identify established programs. Gov. Kay Ivey announced the Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval on Monday, Sept. 28, the same day applications opened.
Ivey hosted Alabama STEM Council leaders in her office for the announcement. The peer-reviewed designation will recognize out-of-school STEM programs and recurring events that demonstrate strong outcomes, consistent implementation and alignment with STEM best practices.
“Alabama’s continued success depends on preparing our young people with the skills and experiences they need to pursue the opportunities of tomorrow,” Ivey said. “The STEM Seal of Approval will help Alabama families identify outstanding programs while recognizing the organizations inspiring students to explore, learn and build bright futures right here in our state.”
The seal is intended to help families find trusted STEM learning opportunities and recognize providers making a measurable impact in Alabama communities.
To qualify, a program or recurring event must have operated in Alabama for at least three years. Eligible applicants include after-school programs, community-based initiatives, nonprofits and summer programs.
The program is a partnership with the Alabama STEM Council, which is part of the Alabama Department of Workforce.
“High-quality STEM experiences help students connect what they learn with the businesses and industries driving Alabama’s economy,” Workforce Secretary Greg Reed said. “By recognizing programs that consistently deliver meaningful results, the Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval will strengthen our workforce pipeline and encourage more young Alabamians to discover the many opportunities available to them.”
Programs and events chosen for the seal will receive the official designation and an award they can display. The Alabama STEM Council will announce the recipients after it reviews the applications.
“The Alabama STEM Council Seal of Approval represents a commitment to recognizing the programs that are truly moving the needle for students in Alabama,” said Cynthia McCarty, acting executive director of the Alabama STEM Council. “We encourage STEM providers across the state to apply and showcase the important work they are doing to engage and inspire the next generation.”
The Alabama STEM Council brings together educators, industry leaders and community partners to expand STEM learning opportunities across the state.
