He was history’s first White House Director of Digital Strategy, and now he’s becoming known in Washington, D.C. as the US State Department’s “digital diplomat.”
Unknown to most outside of Washington, D.C., Huntsville, Ala. native Macon Phillips runs the State Department’s Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP).
According to the IIP’s website, Phillips’ team produces content for the State Department that is meant for foreign audiences in an effort “to build America’s reputation abroad.”
His first role in the Obama Administration was at the White House, as a Special Assistant to the President and Director of Digital Strategy. Previously he ran the new media program for the Presidential Transition Team and served as the deputy director of the Obama campaign’s new media department.
