According to the Alabama Political Reporter, tensions within the Alabama Democratic Party have escalated as Chairman Randy Kelley continues to accuse former U.S. Senator Doug Jones of soliciting donations in a misleading manner. Kelley is alleging that Jones has been raising money under the impression that the funds would support the state party, but instead, they are being used for other political purposes.
In response, Jones denied the claims and has taken legal steps to challenge them. His attorney, Barry Ragsdale, issued a demand for a retraction, asserting that Jones has not been involved in any fundraising on behalf of the ADP. Ragsdale also warned that a libel lawsuit would follow if the allegations were not withdrawn within five days.
Kelley’s claims stem from a conversation with a Huntsville-area minister who reportedly received a fundraising letter from Jones. The minister allegedly believed the donation was meant for the Alabama Democratic Party rather than a political action committee associated with Jones.
Jones has pushed back against these claims, stating that his fundraising efforts clearly disclose where the money goes. He also contends that his last fundraising email was sent before the end of 2024, and the more recent communications cited by Kelley were not solicitations but blog posts with a link to support the publication itself.
Political action committees (PACs) are commonly used by politicians to support campaigns and initiatives aligned with their views. Jones’ PAC has contributed to multiple candidates, including the recent campaign of U.S. Representative Shomari Figures.
Jones has expressed frustration over how the issue was handled, suggesting that direct communication could have clarified any misunderstandings. However, Kelley has stood by his position, emphasizing that he sees the matter as significant.
At this stage, the dispute remains unresolved, with Kelley refusing to retract his claims and Jones signaling that legal action may be the next step.
