The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), a national construction trade association, released its fourth annual “Top Performers” list for commercial and industrial contractors among its members on Tuesday.
BL Harbert International, a Birmingham-based contractor, was named in the top five along with companies out of Louisiana and Texas. The Birmingham company came in at fourth in the rankings.
Michael Bellaman, president, and CEO of ABC said in a release attached with the rankings, “These construction industry leaders invest in and attribute their success to their people.”
According to ABC, the top performers were ranked by size based on the number of hours worked in 2020, as reported in their 2021 STEP applications.
In earning the top distinction, BL Harbert had to achieve a Gold status or higher in ABC’s STEP Safety Management System. To achieve this, the company demonstrated safety that outperforms the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average by more than six times.
In addition to the remarkable safety record, BL Harbert also demonstrated the following attributes as an employer:
- Sustained growth financially and economically
- Market-competitive compensation, benefits and retirement
- Workforce development, and education for career opportunities
- Inclusive and diverse work environment
- Commitment to strong community relations from leadership
Bellaman further commented, “[T]heir value propositions give their employees purpose, delivers quality to their clients and strengthens their bottom line.”
The listings in the ABC report indicate that BL Harbert has shown commitment to corporate responsibility in numerous categories. While quality, safety, and talent management are among their high scores; they also showed commitment to diversity, inclusion, and talent development among their workforce.
Bellaman offered up praise to the top performers, saying, “Congratulations to these top-performing businesses for raising the bar in developing people, winning work and delivering that work safely, ethically and profitably.”
As this report identifies the top 200 performers, this puts BL Harbert in the top 2.5% of contractors in their industry for overall performance.
