Members of Alabama’s Congressional delegation mourned the passing of Pope Francis Monday morning.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church,” said Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo.
The Vatican confirmed Monday afternoon that Francis died of a cerebral stroke. The Pope was recovering from a recent bout of bilateral pneumonia.
“Rest in Peace Pope Francis!” President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Monday. “May God Bless him and all who loved him!”
The College of Cardinals elected Francis to serve as the pope after Pope Benedict XVI resigned from the position in 2013. Francis was born with the name Jorge Mario Bergoglio and is originally from Argentina.
Republican and Democratic members of Alabama’s delegation reflected on the legacy of Francis.
We’re praying this morning for Catholics worldwide and all who were inspired by Pope Francis’ ministry and service. May he rest in peace.

Pope Francis had a commitment to standing up for the poor and the marginalized. He led with the humble heart of a true servant of Christ. His presence and leadership will truly be missed at a time where the world needs more of the humility, compassion, and decency he displayed…
