As reported by WKRG News, the city of Mobile has approved a creative court cost payment plan for those convicted of offenses.
Per Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s office, people convicted of crimes in Mobile will have the option of paying their court cost out of pocket or completing community service. At a rate of $10 per hour of work, those unable to pay their court fees can enter the new voluntary program.
In a press release, Mayor Stimpson said, “I applaud the Municipal Court for their collaborative efforts to create a reformative program that focuses on effective fiscal management, combats poverty in our City, and ensures Mobile continues on its path of becoming the safest city in America.”
The primary service options fall under the broad category of keeping Mobile clean and beautiful. If a person chooses the program, they will ride along with the City’s new litter patrol, picking up trash from the city streets.
“Now, we have citizens and city employees working together creating a cleaner, greener city we can all be proud of,” said Mayor Stimpson.
The new program comes in the wake of moves within the city to help indigent offenders pay their bills instead serving jail time.
