Tuesday in an appearance on Huntsville’s “The Big Talker” on WBHP, the Democratic Party nominee for next week’s Alabama’s fifth congressional district election Peter Joffrion was forced to defend his record on the Second Amendment.
Joffrion, labeled a so-called “gun sense” candidate by the pro-gun control group Moms Demand Action, insisted he was pro-Second Amendment. He was also careful to say he was not for the ban of semi-automatic weapons but limits on magazine clips.
When pressed by host Toni Lowery on what was “reasonable,” Joffrion said “five.”
Exchange as follows:
LOWERY: So, tell me again how you curb gun violence. I just want to be clear that I hear you.
JOFFRION: Well you do it in a number of ways. I do believe in limiting magazine capacities. Hunters aren’t allowed to have unlimited capacities. As a hunter, I was not allowed to have an unlimited number of shotgun shells or bullets when I was hunting.
LOWERY: So limiting them to what? The capacity?
JOFFRION: Well, that would have to be done legislatively to whatever the legislature deems is reasonable.
LOWERY: What do you think is reasonable?
JOFFRION: I don’t think 30, 50, or a hundred rounds is reasonable.
LOWERY: What about 10?
JOFFRION: I think ten is too many. I think five is fine.
If Joffrion’s proposal ever became a reality, it could mean a ban on common firearms like six-shooter revolvers, and also a ban on semi-automatic rifle magazines.
Joffrion faces incumbent Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) in the November 6 general election.
