Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth might get some future support from the White House to widen Interstate 65 through Alabama.
Former President Donald Trump endorsed the idea to expand the interstate during his speech at the ALGOP state dinner Friday night in Montgomery.

“One of the first things that I will do to help the great people of Alabama is to approve a six-lane I-65 from Huntsville to Mobile,” Trump said.
Trump said he asked the Alabama congressional delegation, “What can I do for this great state?”
“You can make a six-laner,” the delegation responded.
“Can everyone agree that’s a big deal?” Trump said to the crowd. “OK, we’ll do that first day.”
Ainsworth, who’s been pushing the idea for months, praised the former president’s promise.
“I’m proud that President Trump is endorsing and supporting my plan to widen I-65,” Ainsworth said. “He pledged tonight that the first day he’s back in the White House he will put federal funding towards widening I-65 from Huntsville to Mobile to keep Alabama’s economy growing.”

Ainsworth also used his drive home from Montgomery to once again highlight the traffic on I-65.

Trump spoke to an estimated 2,700 people at the event and ALGOP Chairman John Wahl said the event brought in a record $1.2 million for the state party.
