Ainsworth: Alabamians want an I-65 expansion–‘It should have been done years ago’

Alabama Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth is continuing his push to expand Interstate 65 throughout the entire state.

Ainsworth has been leading the call to add more lanes to one of the state’s busiest roads and is known for posting on social media when he gets stuck in traffic on the highway.

During his address to the Business Council of Alabama (BCA) on Tuesday morning, Ainsworth discussed what it will take to get the project completed.

“I plan on going to D.C. and making sure we make our case for why I-65 should be one of the top infrastructure projects in the country,” Ainsworth said. “I think when you look at that, that’s probably realistically, a 10-year project. The great thing about that is it’s an 80-20 match. And so when you’re when I’m looking at, how do we invest big money, I think anything we can do to draw down federal money makes a lot of sense. And I think when we’re looking at infrastructure projects now and in the future, that’s really important that we’re drawing on federal dollars. We’re not a rich state, so having the federal dollars come down is important.”

Despite some of the obstacles they will have to overcome to accomplish such a major project, Ainsworth said it’s still something that is popular and needs to be done.

“It also is a matter of everywhere I go in this state, people want that. I mean, they want it. That should have been done years ago. So we’re going to make sure we get that done on the infrastructure side.”

During a recent appearance on Alabama Public Television’s “Capitol Journal,” Ainsworth thanked Gov. Kay Ivey for her leadership on the issue.

“Yeah, so first, definitely the goal is to get [Interstate] 65 six-lane,” he said. “[I] appreciate the governor’s leadership in already starting that process to do that throughout the state in some of the more congested areas. We got to continue from the way we’re saying it now, from Tennessee to the Gulf of America, right? We want to get that done.”

President Donald Trump has endorsed the plan for the I-65 expansion as well.
