The AHSAA made a huge announcement on Wednesday as to the status of where the Super 7 football state championships are going to be held in the future.
According to a release, Mobile and Hancock-Whitney Stadium, the home stadium of the South Alabama Jaguars, will host the title games on a rotating basis, alternating with Protective Stadium in Birmingham through at least 2028. Birmingham will host in 2025 and 2027 while Mobile will get their first chance to host in 2026 and then in 2028. 2024’s Super 7 was held at Protective Stadium.
The games had previously rotated between Tuscaloosa and Auburn with teams getting the chance to play in the home stadiums of the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers, but due to the expanded College Football Playoff and the possibility of home games being played at each, the logistics of hosting the Super 7 make it no longer feasible for the SEC powers to host the games.
“I want to thank all the cities that showed interest in hosting our Super 7 football championships in the coming years,” said AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon following the announcement. “All were impressive and could be outstanding venues for our Super 7 event…However, after much study and discussion, we concluded these two cities were our best options at this time. And I especially want to thank our Central Board for their guidance and support.”
All seven games are held within the same week-long period bringing fans from schools across the state to the host city.
Hancock-Whitney Stadium is a state-of-the-art facility built in 2018 and is the perfect size to host a high school football game. With a capacity of roughly 25,000, compared to the massive coliseums in Tuscaloosa and Auburn, there will be a chance to create an electric environment for high school games and potentially pack the venue.
