Friday, U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to lambast the Democrat-sponsored “Ensuring Access to Abortion Act.”
The legislation would solidify into federal law the right to an abortion and extend well beyond what was afforded in the now-overturned Roe v. Wade.
In his address to the body, Aderholt decried the proposal for its provisions stripping states’ authority to regulate abortion within their borders.
“I rise today in strong opposition to this piece of legislation. The legislation we’re considering today doesn’t just reverse the Supreme Court’s recent decision to protect life, it goes even further than Roe v. Wade,” noted the congressman. “My colleagues on the other side of the aisle assembled this bundle of policies in an effort to inhibit and undermine the enforcement of pro-life state laws.”
According to Aderholt, the measure would place the United States on par with the dictatorial regimes of North Korea and China in terms of abortion law.
“This bill, in combination with the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act, seeks to undermine the will of the people, and places the United States on a shortlist with North Korea and China as countries with the most extreme abortion policies in the world,” he proclaimed. “Instead of inhibiting, we should be enabling the states that have chosen to extend the responsibility of protecting its citizens to also include the unborn.”
The congressman made mention of Alabama’s now-implemented right-to-life law, which effectively banned elective abortions within the state’s borders.
“The Alabama legislature enacted the Human Life Protection Act in 2019, reflecting the will of the citizens of the state,” added Aderholt. “The bill imposed a near total ban on abortions in the state. I will not allow those voices to be silenced by radical federal abortion bills.”
He concluded, “I urge my colleagues to oppose this measure, and all of the extreme measures yet to come attacking the most vulnerable.”
