7. Former President Donald Trump amplified posts on social media calling for a televised military tribunal for former Republican U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and the jailing of top elected officials, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, prompting Cheney to respond that Trump’s actions demonstrate he is “not a stable adult” and unfit for office. The bed-wetting over this stuff will mostly fall on deaf ears as two Trump advisors (Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon) are currently in jail for not appearing before Liz Cheney’s January 6 committee while Biden administration officials remain unpunished for similar moves.
6. The first prosecutions under an Alabama law passed in April 2024 that lets drug dealers be charged, has resulted in manslaughter charges for four Baldwin County residents following a fentanyl overdose death in Orange Beach. Overdose deaths in Baldwin County have risen sharply in recent years, with a significant portion involving fentanyl. While authorities aim to send a strong message to drug dealers about the severe consequences of their actions, putting them in jail is a good plan as well.
5. After scaring most of America with his performance during his disastrous debate performance, 75% of Democrats now want someone else other than President Joe Biden, but this is complicated. As polls testing all sorts of potential replacements for Biden, only former First Lady Michelle Obama is favored in betting markets to beat Donald Trump but Democrats seem to think sitting down with ABC News hack and former Clinton administration flack George Stephanopoulos for a recorded puff piece is a good idea for Biden.
4. President Joe Biden has a wild new lie ready for his poor debate performance and it is pretty ridiculous and untrue. “I wasn’t very smart,” President Biden says, “I decided to travel around the world a couple times, going through I don’t know how many time zones — for real I think it 15 time zones…I didn’t listen to my staff.” His use of “for real” is a classic Joe Bidenism for “I am a terrible person and a terrible liar,” because his foreign trip was 12 days before the debate and he spent a week at Camp David “napping.”
3. The knives are out for President Joe Biden with new reports showing that the elderly, and now orange president, is scaring his staff “shitless.” The White House says Biden is totally not scaring his staff with White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andre Bates saying, “That’s simply not who [Biden] is,” but they also claimed he is mentally with it, as well.
2. It is no surprise that homicides in Birmingham and Jefferson County increased in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Birmingham recorded 75 homicides, a 15% increase from last year, while the county had 98 killings, up by two. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has a couple theories: first he believes that the citizens of Birmingham protect the killers in their midst and he is undoubtedly right, but his question about acceptable murder targets is odd, “Where’s the community’s gumption on ‘no women or children, or seniors?’”
1. Former President Trump’s sentencing in his New York hush money case is likely to be delayed as his lawyers seek to overturn his criminal conviction, leveraging the Supreme Court’s recent immunity ruling to challenge the conviction before the originally scheduled sentencing date of July 11. The Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is fine with pushing it past the Republican National Convention, “Although we believe defendant’s arguments to be without merit, we do not oppose his request for leave to file and his putative request to adjourn sentencing pending determination of his motion. We respectfully request a deadline of July 24, 2024.”
