7 Things: SCOTUS could hear Alabama redistricting case again; Britt/Tuberville play role in shutdown talks; and more …

7. The Freedom From Religion Foundation has once again sent a series of press releases targeting Alabama entities who they claim, wrongly, have violated the often misunderstood “separation of church and state.” To Alabama’s credit, no one cares what the Freedom From Religion Foundation thinks.

6. Politico has dubbed U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) the future of the “Post-Trump” Republican Party, they also are attempting to frame her against fellow Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn). They cite her ability to work behind the scenes, her age, her gender, her Capitol Hill resume, and they quote Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) who said, “If she aspires to rise through elected leadership, I see a pretty clear path forward.”

5. California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has made a decision that makes total sense, so obviously the media and his Democrats are furious at him. Newsom vetoed a bill that would require parents to “affirm” their child’s “gender identity” or risk having their child removed from their custody.

4. What it is going to take to avoid a government shutdown is not clear but reports show the U.S. House GOP seems to be scrambling for an answer, recently Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) declared that money for Ukraine will remain in the defense budget. Alabama U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) says not one more dime more without more information. “The American people deserve to know what their money has gone to. How is the counteroffensive going? Are the Ukrainians any closer to victory than they were 6 months ago? What is our strategy, and what is the president’s exit plan? What does the administration define as victory in Ukraine? What assistance has the United States provided Ukraine under Title 10? It would be an absurd abdication of congressional responsibility to grant this request without knowing the answers to these questions.”

3. A new poll follows a trend that is developing with former President Donald Trump up 10 points on President Joe Biden in a general election matchup. There is plenty of time for change but Biden’s unfavorables on the economy, immigration, age, and demeanor are really hurting him at this point.

2. While the government shutdown remains the largest issue in politics today, while remaining an almost certainty, some members of Congress are trying to end the shutdown as a tool of brinksmanship. U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) has sponsored a bill that will end government shutdowns by keeping the government open as budget negotiations continue on a never-ending cycle of continuing resolutions that mirror the previous years’ spending. Seems unlikely to pass as many appear to like to use the shutdowns as a political weapon.

1. The U.S. Supreme Court WILL take up arguments over a special master redrawing Alabama congressional districts. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall believes that the maps the Legislature drew follow the standards required for the districts, “but because it doesn’t guarantee a second safe seat for Democrats, Plaintiffs now demand racial discrimination. … The VRA does not require this sort of racial sorting of voters, and the Constitution does not allow it.”
