7 Things: Large number of migrant work permits and workers appear in Alabama; Trump/Harris debate happening; and more …

7. Prosecutors from special counsel David Weiss’ office allege that Hunter Biden received payments from Romanian businessman Gabriel Popoviciu, who sought to influence U.S. government agencies while Joe Biden was vice president. This allegation potentially ties President Biden to his son’s overseas business activities and suggests the payments were part of a lobbying effort, with Hunter and his associates splitting over $3 million.

6. Second Congressional District Republican nominee Caroleene Dobson vowed to oppose any changes to Title IX that would permit men to compete in women’s sports, arguing it would undermine the progress made by female athletes. This comes following a controversial women’s boxing match at the 2024 Olympic Games and other sporting controversies amidst the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts to expand Title IX protections to include gender identity. Dobson also called on her opponent, Democrat Shomari Figures, to clarify his stance, criticizing his previous support for policies allowing biological males in female sports.

5. Hoover High School football coaches Drew Gilmer and Adam Helms have resigned after being placed on administrative leave following the circulation of videos showing alleged abusive behavior during a practice, some players defended the coach. Criminal charges have not been filed against Gilmer or Helms but Alabama State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) is condemning their actions as extreme and harmful to the student involved, so this is not over yet.

4. After CNN suggested the Trump campaign had a cunning scheme to force Vice President Kamala Harris to talk to the media, she finally promised to do an interview “by the end of the month,” this is as her VP pick’s disastrous rollout and her repeating speeches. Former President Donald Trump’s plot included answering “stupid” reporter questions in an hour-plus long but very-meh press conference where he agreed to do the ABC News debate and challenged her to two more, which she will not do because she fears more debates and especially her Fox News debate.

3. Because Vice President Kamala Harris has no accomplishments and has made very few public policy pronouncements, it is hard to gather what the chronic flip-flopper feels about anything and a anti-Israel group claims she will stop sending weapons to Israel after a meeting with her. The Uncommitted National Movement declared this after meeting with the Vice President but an aide clarified that Harris has not supported such an embargo and emphasized her commitment to ensuring Israel’s defense.

2. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has joined a coalition of 16 states in filing a lawsuit to block the Biden-Harris administration from allowing illegal immigrants to receive healthcare benefits under the Obamacare (Affordable Care Act). Marshall argues that the plan, which would extend taxpayer-subsidized health plans to over 200,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, including 3,460 in Alabama, is unconstitutional and unfair to American taxpayers and violates the Affordable Care Act’s provisions and federal laws prohibiting public benefits for illegal aliens.

1. Tensions are rising in Alabama as migrants are being dropped off in Marshall County.  Residents in Albertville and Boaz report seeing charter buses dropping off what appear to be Haitian immigrants at various locations, and this now happening in Athens, as well.  Local officials, including Albertville Mayor Tracy Honea and State Rep. Brock Colvin (R-Albertville), are investigating the situation, with many residents expressing frustration over the impact of the growing migrant population on local resources and services. WAAY-TV is reporting that the Athens’ mayor’s office says, “ICE confirmed there are a number of new migrants with federal work permits in North Alabama. As far as how many? No one has said.”
