It’s hard to believe, but week four on the college football calendar is already upon us as the season starts to fly by just as it does year after year. Once again, another massive Saturday slate is upon fans and will be on every television across the South.
With the Alabama Crimson Tide on their first bye week and the Auburn Tigers kicking off conference play with a huge showdown at Oklahoma, here are the three games you need to be keeping your eye on outside of this state on Saturday.
Tulane @ #13 Ole Miss
2:30 p.m. CST
On the surface, this doesn’t look all that tasty with a non power-four team headed on the road to an SEC school which usually would give the lesser program the business. This is not just any small program though. The Green Wave have a strong case for best Group of 5 team, and head coach Jon Sumrall is going to take a big job — potentially in the SEC — sooner rather than later.
The Rebels are favored by two touchdowns at home, but it would not be a surprise to anyone to see Tulane compete in this one and force a thriller. Ole Miss had better be prepared, because this is certainly a team capable of not only playing with them, but even beating them.
South Carolina @ #23 Missouri
6:30 p.m. CST
What a difference one week can make. The Gamecocks went into the season with some real hype behind quarterback LaNorris Sellers, but when Sellers was knocked out of last week’s game against Vanderbilt, their flaws were exposed quickly. After being absolutely destroyed by the Commodores, South Carolina drops to unranked and is a 10 point underdog at Missouri.
Sellers is likely to play, but it’s a tough task against a fast paced Tigers offense which has surprised some people thus far. Missouri can establish themselves this week as a legitimate playoff contender if they get to 4-0 with an impressive performance and victory over the Gamecocks.
Florida @ #4 Miami
6:30 p.m. CST
Outside of Auburn, this is the marquee game of the week. Once again, Billy Napier finds himself firmly on the hot seat and looking like he is not going to survive the year. The Gator defense played well in Baton Rouge last week, but five interceptions from DJ Lagway did not give them a real chance to win. Miami is favored by close to 10, and look like one of the best teams in all of college football led by Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck.
Napier has a chance here to earn what very well may be a must-win in order to preserve his job status, but it will be a monumental goal against a Hurricanes team which very much may be the real deal.
It should be another tremendous week of college football across the country and one which has as high a level of stakes as games this early can have.
