Harper named chair of Economic Development Committee

Alabama House of RepresentativesAlabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, announced Monday that Rep. Alan Harper, R-Northport, will be the new Chairman of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee.

Harper will replace Rep. Barry Mask, R-Wetumpka, who recently announced his resignation, which will take effect September 30.

Hubbard said Harper was the obvious choice to take over as the chairman because of his extensive business background and economic development experience.

“Rep. Harper’s career in economic development spans three decades and I’m confident the knowledge and skills he brings to the table will help Alabama continue on its path to being the most business friendly state in the nation,” Hubbard said. “Alan is a trusted and experienced legislator with an incredible work ethic and a career long commitment to public service, all qualities that make him an excellent choice for his position.”

Alan HarperHarper thanked Speaker Hubbard for the opportunity and said he will expand the economic development role he has been playing in West Alabama to the entire state.

“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to serve as Chairman of this important committee and I appreciate Speaker Hubbard’s confidence in my ability to fill this role,” Rep. Harper said. “I am committed to bringing more jobs and more business to the state of Alabama. I have a proven track record of job creation in West Alabama and I’m eager to expand those successful efforts across the state.”

Harper was elected to House District 61 in 2006. As well as serving on the Economic Development and Tourism Committee, Harper also serves on the Rules Committee, which sets the agenda for each legislative day.

Harper will take over as the chairman of the committee on October 1st.
