If you were to make a list of things politicians never say, “I don’t know” would have to be on the list, right? I mean, don’t they at least pretend to know everything?
Or how about, “somebody else knows more about this than I do.” No politician would ever admit that another candidate might be more informed or better prepared, would they?
If you’re Robert Shattuck running in the Republican primary for the U.S. House of Representatives in Alabama’s 6th Congressional District, those are exactly the kinds of things you say — and more.
During Monday evening’s 6th Congressional District debate, Shattuck drew both applause and laughs for his brutally honest and quirky answers to just about every question.

When asked about global warming a couple of questions into the debate, Shattuck immediately made himself one of the most honest men to ever run for public office when he simply said, “I don’t know the answer to these questions.”
After being prompted to give his opinion on the United States’ surveillance tactics, Shattuck admitted, “This is to be decided by persons who have more knowledge and expertise than I have.”
And when NBC 13’s Linda White asked whether or not marijuana should be legalized on the federal level, Shattuck responded, “I don’t consider my views on this matter important for consideration by the voters.”
Shattuck doesn’t stand much of a chance of getting elected to Congress. And that’s more than likely a good thing. But whoever does manage to get themselves elected could probably stand to have a dose of his humility and willingness to just plain tell the truth.
