U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville made education the focus of his latest campaign ad for governor, taking aim at Democratic nominee Doug Jones over his opposition to Alabama’s CHOOSE Act.
“Liberals, they love to tell you how brilliant they are,” Tuberville (R-Auburn) says in the new spot, titled “Smarter Plan.” “But their education plan kicks tens of thousands of children out of the school of their choice.”
Tuberville lays out several education priorities he says he would pursue as governor.
“We’ve got a smarter plan,” he says. “Let’s start by protecting school choice and empowering parents, reward the good teachers while holding the poor ones accountable, and focus on workforce development.”
“Education isn’t just about making our kids college-ready or career-ready, they should be life-ready,” Tuberville concludes. “I’m Tommy Tuberville. Let’s educate, not indoctrinate.”
The ad’s attack is aimed at Jones’ stated opposition to the CHOOSE Act, Alabama’s education savings account program.
Jones said in August that he wanted to “stop the CHOOSE Act in its tracks,” including stopping new participants from entering the program before either phasing it out or making changes. He has argued that public dollars should remain in public schools and questioned the accountability requirements for private schools receiving state-supported funds.
The CHOOSE Act provides education savings accounts worth $7,000 for students attending participating schools and $2,000 for students in home education programs, capped at $4,000 per family.
More than 34,000 students were approved for the program during the 2026-27 school year, representing more than $174 million in education savings accounts. Nearly 49,000 students applied. Under current law, the program becomes available to families regardless of household income beginning with the 2027-28 academic year.
The spot follows Tuberville’s first television ad of the general election campaign, released earlier this month, which focused on taxes and his pledge to eliminate Alabama’s remaining state sales tax on groceries.
Tuberville, the Republican nominee, faces Jones in the November 3 general election for governor.
