West Alabama man known for award winning ‘S-Town’ podcast shot by police

A popular podcaster was shot by police Sunday after allegedly “brandishing” a gun during a standoff. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the fatal officer-involved shooting.

According to the Woodstock Police Department, Joseph Tyler Goodson barricaded himself inside a home resulting in a standoff around midnight. At some point during the standoff, Goodson reportedly “brandished” a gun at police and as a result was shot and killed.

During the incident, Goodson posted on Facebook that “Police bout to shoot me down in my own yard.”

Goodson was featured in the popular podcast from 2017, “S-Town.” The podcast which garnered millions of views and received a Peabody Award, was centered around the life of the late John B. McLemore, his friendship with Goodson, and the town of Woodstock.

“I know that everyone wants answers and details, myself included,” Woodstock Mayor Jeff Dodson said in a statement. “Tyler was well known and loved by myself, his family and this community. That love extends far beyond due to the S-Town podcast.

“On Sunday, Dec. 3, at the request of the Woodstock Police Department, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an investigation concerning an officer involved shooting, which occurred in Woodstock,” the statement said. “Shortly after midnight, the Woodstock Police Department responded to a call for service near the 500 Block of Georgia Loop in Woodstock within Bibb County. Once on scene, officers encountered Joseph Tyler Goodson, 32, of Woodstock, who barricaded himself in the residence and a stand-off ensued.

“A multitude of law enforcement officers from various agencies responded to the scene to assist. During the course of the incident, Goodson brandished a gun at officers. Goodson was shot and was later pronounced deceased.”
