In a tweet on Wednesday, Alabama Governor Kay highlighted a web portal that displays locations across Alabama that are providing free breakfast and lunch to any student under 18 years of age.
The program will be available for the entirety of the two and half week mandated break from school that Ivey ordered as a way to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
No background check or paperwork of any kind will occur at any of the free meal locations. All that is needed to qualify for a meal is a child under 18 years old.
To maintain social distancing, meals will be picked up, not consumed on-site.
The site — breakforaplate.com — is a joint project of the Alabama Department of Education and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
When users click through, they select the county where they live and the portal displays the locations providing meals, as well as contact info for the person in charge of the location.
During the short-term closure of Alabama schools, students in need of breakfast & lunch can receive them free at sites across the state until April 6. No paperwork is required. Learn more here: https://t.co/FwCTz0ZWdy. @AlabamaAchieves #alpolitics #COVID19
