Auburn University announced this week it will claim seven additional football national championships, expanding the program’s recognized total to nine and formally acknowledging the undefeated 2004 team.

While the claim gives Auburn now nine titles and numerous more SEC titles, the significant majority of them are from the last century and out of the memories of most fans.

The most significant one based on recent memory though was the undefeated 2004 team who was left out of the national title game despite their incredible resume which included five top-15 wins.

The Tigers would go on to defeat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl while USC destroyed Oklahoma in the championship game, and USC would later have their title vacated for various violations. Auburn not getting a chance despite their perfect record is seen as one of the greatest injustices of the century, and fans are thrilled to finally call themselves a champion for one of their greatest seasons ever.

Of course, that team’s head coach was U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), and Tuberville has often spoken about his opinion that his team was not done right, so nobody was happier than he was upon the news.

Tuberville put out a video congratulating the group on the accomplishment:

“I wanna congratulate the 2004 Auburn Tigers football team on being recognized as the true national champion of college football of 2004,” he said. “There is no doubt that the 2004 Auburn team was the best team in the country for the entire season…not only were our players great athletes, but they were great young men…This team is now finally getting the recognition they deserve, so War Eagle and congratulations to all the players, coaches, parents, and our great fans who made this possible.”
