Former congressional candidate Casey Wardynski believes President Biden has been looking for a reason to prevent the Space Command Headquarters move to Huntsville since he was inaugurated.
In reaction to the reports by NBC News on the situation, Wardynski, who served as the assistant secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs under President Trump, said he’s not surprised Biden is looking to block the headquarters from coming to Redstone Arsenal.
Wardynski discussed the issue during a recent appearance on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”
“I’m surprised the people are surprised at this,” Wardynski said. “When I was running for Congress, I talked about this at length. The idea that Space Command was a sure thing for Huntsville was, to me, not in the cards. The minute Trump left, every day that went by it was less likely that Space Command was going to come here and Biden was looking for an opportunity to link it to something.”
According to the report, Alabama’s strict laws on abortion played a role in Biden wanting to keep the HQ in Colorado. Wardynski said he doesn’t buy that explanation.
“If we follow the DoD and DoJ arguments,” he said, “it would basically say we’ve got to close Maxwell down in Montgomery, Redstone here in Huntsville, Novosel which used to be called Rucker down in southern Alabama, because how could we have any troops there? ‘Cause they may not want to stay in the military because of Alabama’s views on the abortion and the laws and they might hurt recruiting?
“The whole thing’s ridiculous.”
While some have directed blame toward U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) over this because he’s been holding up Defense Department promotions, Wardynski defended the senator.
“Now we’ve got Senator Tuberville blocking general officer promotions over a power of the purse issue, which Biden has called an abortion issue, and that’s what this is really about in my mind,” he said. “They’re trying to put pressure on Tuberville, and they’re ultimately going to blame him … and that’s BS. It wasn’t coming. They planned to leave it in Colorado, and now they’re looking to cause trouble for Tuberville, who’s got a lot of gumption and sticks up for conservative values in Alabama.”
Wardynski said Biden is just doing this for purely partisan political reasons.
“They’ve pretty well laid out their logic and it is illogical,” he said. “It’s all bare-knuckle politics. It comes from the White House. The idea that military leaders have a lot to say is bogus.”
