The annual Selma Jubilee, a celebration of a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement, is taking place virtually in 2021 due to the pandemic.
A digital recreation of the Selma-Montgomery March is being made available with help from Google. The live version of the virtual event is running from March 5-7.
In a sponsorship finalized this week, Google will allow citizens to recreate the march and see its famous landmarks from their computers. Those participating will be able to earn badges as they reach historic locations.
“We’re honored to partner with organizers of the 56th Selma Jubilee for such a meaningful milestone and virtual event – and are very proud that our product has been integrated to make this year’s event possible,” said Clark Gillespy, Alabama native and Google Global Head of Economic and Community Development.
