MOBILE, Ala. — On September 25, the University of Mobile is closing the doors of their classrooms and sending students into the community for a university-wide day of service called Project Serve.

Project Serve was started on the University of Mobile’s 50th anniversary in 2011 and has occurred every year since. This year, more than 1,200 students, faculty and staff will participate in the service initiative.

University President Dr. Mark Foley said the University of Mobile utilizes both classroom learning and service to positively impact their community with their university.

“The University of Mobile mission of ‘Changing Lives to Change the World’ isn’t about education alone – it’s about transforming the nation by meeting both spiritual and physical needs of people. Through Project Serve, the University of Mobile impacts thousands of lives by being the hands and feet of the gospel of Christ throughout the community,” Foley said.

The day starts with a rally on the Christian university campus before university participants spread across Mobile and Baldwin counties to serve at over 60 locations, including the Boys and Girls Club, Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, and the Joseph Project.

The University of Mobile created Project Serve to celebrate volunteerism, community and faith. Students serve alongside their professors and academic department for the purpose of “sharing God’s love through the skills and knowledge they are gaining in the classroom,” according to a press release from the university.

Student Government Association President Kayla Litton also says that the university students enjoy having the opportunity of tying together Christian principles with education and service.

“Project Serve is a day when the Mobile area is greeted by smiling students with open hearts and hands that are ready to serve. This team of young adults gives the future a glimmer of hope, because of their heart toward serving their neighbor,” Litton said.

!he City of Mobile will proclaim Sept. 25, 2015 as “University of Mobile Project Serve Day” with Mayor Sandy Stimpson presenting the proclamation during kick-off at 8 a.m. on campus.
