A University of Alabama student was killed early Wednesday morning when a truck sped through a large crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter, fatally striking at least 15 people and injuring dozens more.
Shortly after the event, it was revealed that the driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, had an ISIS flag attached to his vehicle when the attack took place. The FBI has since classified the incident as an act of terrorism and said that it will continue to investigate in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies.
Following the attack, University of Alabama President Stuart Bell released a statement addressing the death of the student.
“I learned today that Kareem Badawi, one of our students at The University of Alabama, was killed in the terrorist attack in New Orleans,” Dr. Bell said. “I grieve alongside the family and friends of Kareem in their heartbreaking loss. Our staff have been actively engaged in supportive outreach and the Office of Student Care and Well-Being is available at 205-348-2461 or [email protected]. Please take a moment to pray for those impacted by this tragedy.”
U.S. Senator Katie Britt, a University of Alabama alumnus, called the terrorist attack “unbridled evil” and urged the swift confirmation of several of President-elect Donald Trump’s nominees to counter future threats.
“We continue to pray for the victims’ loved ones and the survivors, as well as the brave law enforcement officers who rushed toward danger in selfless service to their fellow Americans,” said Britt. “The American people deserve transparency and accountability as the pursuit of justice proceeds. As Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, I have requested a formal briefing from DHS and FBI and that a briefing be made available to all Senators. With the 119th Congress beginning Friday, we must work nonstop to get President Trump’s national security team in place without delay.”
President-elect Trump issued a statement on Truth Social following the terrorist attack.
“Our hearts are with all of the victims and their loved ones, including the brave police officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil.”
