For its annual campaign drive, the United Way of West Alabama has its sights set on a record-breaking effort.
The charitable organization is hoping to pull in at least $4.5 million.
Chairman Chris Gunter said there was a method to setting the goal.
“We’re very strategic about it,” he said. “We were asking what are the needs of the community and then we came up with this number.”
To succeed in breaking the record, Gunter called for called for a “united front.”
“Let’s commit to reaching our goal, ensuring that every member of our community has the opportunity to thrive,” he said. “With this year’s goal of $4.5 million, we are demonstrating our commitment to making a lasting impact on the lives of West Alabamians.”
Jackie Wuska, president and CEO of the United Way of West Alabama, acknowledged that rising costs on everyday items are making the nonprofit’s goals harder to reach.
“We know that with rising costs on groceries and other basic items, many of our donors are concerned about their economic outlook. That also means that those who were already struggling to make ends meet are struggling even more now,” she said. “We added four new partner agencies last year to address these needs, but that means we are asking everyone who can be part of this year’s campaign to give.
“The only way we can reach the goal and support all of our neighbors in need is to unite for the good of all.”
The United Way of West Alabama supports more than 30 nonprofit agencies that work to improve the quality of life in nine counties.
According to data, 25% of West Alabamians receive assistance through United Way of West Alabama and its partner agencies.
