UAB Health System has announced its acquisition of Southview Medical Group, a multi-specialty medical practice serving patients across central Alabama. The acquisition was finalized January 1, 2026.
The partnership aims to strengthen access to high-quality care in Birmingham and surrounding communities as demand for both primary and specialty services continues to grow.
As part of the agreement, UAB Health System assumes ownership of Southview Medical Group’s network of providers and facilities, including locations at UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham and UAB Medicine St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.
“Southview Medical Group has a long-standing reputation for delivering exceptional, patient-centered care,” said UAB Health System CEO Dawn Bulgarella. “This agreement combines that tradition with the resources and innovation of an academic health system. It also strengthens UAB Medicine’s ability to provide seamless access to primary care, improve care coordination, and ensure patients benefit from the full spectrum of services — from prevention to advanced treatment — right here in Birmingham.”
For more than a century, Southview Medical Group has served Birmingham-area patients, originally operating as Southside Medical Group and Lakeview Internal Medicine before merging in 1994.
Today, Southview Medical Group’s more than 30 providers span specialties including internal medicine, cardiology, infectious disease, endocrinology and gastroenterology. The practice cares for more than 51,000 unique patients annually and records over 130,000 patient visits each year.
“Southview’s integration with the UAB Health System marks a pivotal moment in advancing coordinated, community-based care,” said Southview Medical Group President Noah Fitzpatrick, M.D. “We are excited to partner with an institution like UAB that aligns with our goal of providing top quality, cost efficient and timely care for our patients. Our patients will continue seeing their trusted providers while gaining access to UAB’s broader network of specialists, advanced technology and comprehensive care options.”
Kenny Shafer, chief executive officer of UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham, said Southview Medical Group has played a long-standing role in delivering patient-centered care throughout Birmingham and central Alabama.
“Southview Medical Group has delivered exceptional care to Birmingham and central Alabama since 1922,” Shafer said. “Access to primary and specialty care remains one of our region’s most pressing challenges, and we are committed to improving that. This partnership demonstrates that commitment and strengthens access combining Southview’s trusted expertise with UAB St. Vincent’s resources, creating a seamless, high-quality care experience for residents across Birmingham and beyond.”
