UA National Alumni Association receives record $8 million gift from non-alumnus

The University of Alabama’s National Alumni Association received an $8 million gift from the estate of a man who did not attend the school — a record contribution.

The huge gift will enhance four existing Alumni Crimson Scholarships for in-state students and create a fifth endowed scholarship for out-of-state students.

Bill Decas, who passed away in June of 2023, was a huge Alabama fan despite not attending or living there. He was an attorney in Massachusetts and practiced law with his brother George at Decas, Murray & Decas as well as owning a century-old cranberry business.

According to a release from the school, he did form a ton of friendships at the University after he was initially captured by Paul “Bear” Bryant and the Alabama teams of the 1960s.

Decas was good friends with previous National Alumni Association Director Pat Whetstone which is what led to his existing four scholarships, the NAA’s most prestigious scholarship.

With the existing scholarship, recipients receive yearly tuition along with a $300 annual book grant, a $3,500 stipend and an additional, one-time $2,000 study-abroad and research stipend.

“Trust and friendship were factors in Bill supporting UA,” Whetsone said. “And when he got to meet the scholarship recipients, I think that really attracted him to growing the scholarships even more.”

“The relationship between Pat Whetstone and Bill Decas stands as a fantastic example of the power of relationships,” said current NAA Executive Director Jimmy Warren. “Their story reminds us that meaningful friendships and a commitment to giving back can spark transformation far beyond what individuals can achieve alone.”

The Decas scholarships have funded 14 students and over $400,000 in tuition assistance, and will continue to impact students lives as it only grows following Decas’ final gift.
