The University of Alabama announced it is expanding its statewide footprint with a new Wiregrass Hub in Enterprise, a facility designed to strengthen research capabilities, support economic development, and connect local communities with the university’s expertise.
Scheduled to open in fall 2026, the downtown Enterprise facility will serve as a regional center for water research, student engagement, and industry collaboration, extending UA’s role as a driver of innovation and economic growth across Alabama.
UA officials say the hub will anchor new partnerships and provide practical tools to help southeast Alabama communities address infrastructure challenges, workforce needs, and disaster preparedness.
“The opening of the UA Wiregrass Hub represents another major step in The University of Alabama’s commitment to strengthening innovation and economic development across our state,” said UA President Peter J. Mohler. “By expanding nationally recognized expertise in water research and planning directly into Southeast Alabama, we are continuing our mission as an institution that serves every region of our state.”
A key component of the new facility will be the Critical Response and Information Management System for Operational Needs, or CRIMSON, Water Initiative. The program will provide local governments and agencies with data analysis and forecasting tools designed to help prepare for floods, droughts, and other water-related emergencies.
University officials say the initiative will bring UA’s nationally recognized water expertise directly into the Wiregrass region, helping communities improve planning and resilience while translating academic research into real-world solutions.
“Expanding our water research efforts into the Wiregrass advances our commitment to delivering impactful solutions that serve the state and the nation, while building strong, lasting partnerships with the local community,” said Dr. Bryan Boudouris, UA vice president for research and economic development.
Beyond research, the Wiregrass Hub is expected to play a direct role in strengthening Alabama’s workforce pipeline and supporting business development. The facility will provide prospective student outreach programs and serve as a regional connection point for local residents seeking higher education opportunities.
It will also include support from the Alabama Small Business Development Center, which offers resources and assistance to entrepreneurs and small businesses across the state.
“This facility reflects the University’s commitment to strategic partnerships that translate into practical solutions for Alabama communities,” said Chad Tindol, UA senior vice president for partnerships and strategy. “Just as importantly, it creates a welcoming space that connects local students to pathways for higher education and long-term opportunity.”
University officials say the Wiregrass Hub’s location near Fort Rucker will open new opportunities for collaboration tied to infrastructure protection, research partnerships, and national defense initiatives.
By establishing a permanent presence in southeast Alabama, the university aims to accelerate innovation, support workforce development, and provide tools that improve community resilience while contributing to Alabama’s long-term economic competitiveness.
