The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware is currently investigating Hunter Biden’s business activities with foreign countries. Three Alabama congressmen are joining other members of Congress calling for the appointment of a special counsel to lead that investigation.
U.S. Reps. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville), Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) and Jerry Carl (R-Mobile) joined 92 other members of Congress in sending a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland saying, “Under the extraordinary circumstances established by Hunter Biden and President Biden’s relationships, we ask that you appoint a Special Counsel to oversee this critical investigation.”
The letter argues there is growing evidence President Joe Biden’s son took advantage of his family name and his father’s position to gain influence in foreign business activities.
“It is increasingly clear that Hunter Biden took advantage of his father’s position as Vice President to develop business relationships with clients in Ukraine, China, and Kazakhstan,” the congressmen argued in the letter. “Additionally, it is clear from emails secured from Hunter Biden’s laptop that he used a cash gift from a Ukrainian Natural Gas company, Burisma, of which he was a board member, to pay off personal tax liabilities. Finally, Hunter Biden likely facilitated lobbying for foreign entities through third-party channels without registering for the Foreign Agents Registration Act.”
The letter concluded that the only way to avoid a conflict of interest was to appoint a special counsel.
“We believe that in the case of Hunter Biden a Special Counsel must be appointed to preserve the integrity of this investigation and any subsequent prosecution,” the letter said. “A Special Counsel would also ensure there is no bias in the investigation or undue influence from the White House.”
Brooks also put out a statement on Twitter explaining why he joined his colleagues in this request.
“It’s clear that Hunter Biden took advantage of his father’s position to develop business relationships with foreign clients,” said Brooks. “I’ve joined dozens of colleagues in writing to AG Garland asking that he appoint a special counsel to ensure a criminal investigation is fair & objective.”
