Two-thirds of gun owners say they would "defy" gun bans

Fox News released a poll this past week that shows just how strong opposition to the gun grabbers is among the vast majority of gun owners in America. The poll, which was conducted under the joint direction of Anderson Robbins Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), asked “If the government passed a law to take your guns, would you give up your guns or defy the law and keep your guns?” 65 percent of individuals who have a gun in their household said that they would openly defy such a law. Only 22 percent said they would willingly give up their guns to the government while 13 percent weren’t sure.

As you might expect, Republicans were more likely to say they would defy such government overreaching (70%). But a majority of Democrats (52%) also said they would refuse to comply. For the anti-gun lawmakers who are currently pushing for a ban on over 150 types of firearms, these numbers are a well-needed dose of reality. Last Thursday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein introduced the “Assault Weapons Ban of 2013.” The legislation would prohibit the manufacture and sale of hundreds of firearms and has been met with fierce opposition from advocates of the 2nd amendment across the political spectrum.

Even the incessant efforts to vilify the National Rifle Association seem to have fallen on def ears. The NRA maintains broad support as 56 percent view them favorably, 33 percent unfavorably. That’s a significant uptick from previous surveys taken in the early 2000s that showed support for the NRA well below 50 percent. “Senator Feinstein has been trying to ban guns from law-abiding citizens for decades.” The NRA said in a statement. “It’s disappointing but not surprising that she is once again focused on curtailing the Constitution instead of prosecuting criminals or fixing our broken mental health system. The American people know gun bans do not work and we are confident Congress will reject Senator Feinstein’s wrong-headed approach.”

Thomas Jefferson once said, “What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance?” Let these polling numbers serve as a warning to any administration or legislative body that would seek to disarm the American people.
