Tuskegee University remains on lockdown after mass shooting during homecoming festivities

After a mass shooting at Tuskegee University claimed the life of one and led to the injury of sixteen others, the school has announced that it will remain on lockdown through Tuesday. Those who live near the shooting will be able to relocate to a different part of campus.

Additionally, the university is now a closed campus and an ID will be required to gain access. ID cards must be worn at all times while on campus. Only students, faculty, or staff members will now be permitted.

The incident took place at around 1:30 a.m. during the HBCU’s 100th Homecoming celebration. Officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said on Monday that the deceased was not a student at the school but several of those wounded are.

According to the ALEA, twelve of the victims were injured by gunfire and transported to area hospitals in Montgomery and Lee counties. Four other individuals sustained injuries that were not related to gunfire over the course of the incident.

Jaquez Myrick, 25, of Montgomery, has been arrested in connection with the Tuskegee shooting.

“Myrick was found leaving the scene of the shooting that occurred on the campus of Tuskegee University,” authorities said. “Myrick was arrested and charged federally with possession of a machine gun.”

Tuskegee relieved its chief of campus security following the fatal shooting. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
