Tuscaloosa County School System (TCSS) officials recently announced that varsity sports at Holt High School will be discontinued after the 2025-2026 school year due to declining student participation.
The decision, which TCSS described as difficult but necessary, was made after careful evaluation of participation rates and what would best serve student-athletes. Beginning in the fall of 2026, Holt students wishing to participate in varsity sports will have the opportunity to join teams at either Brookwood High School or Tuscaloosa County High School, depending on their residential area.
CBS 42 News interviewed school officials, parents, and students about the decision.
“This decision was not made lightly,” said Terri Brewer, TCSS Director of Public Relations. “Every school is different, and we made the choice that we believe is best for Holt’s student population.”
Despite rumors circulating on social media, Brewer emphasized that Holt High School is not closing. The school will remain open, continuing to offer club sports, extracurricular activities, and state-of-the-art educational facilities.
News of the decision has left many Holt students, parents, and alumni frustrated. They worry about the potential loss of school spirit and sense of community that varsity sports help foster.
“Our varsity sports bring Holt together as a family,” said junior bowling student Benson Colburn. “It’s more than just sports. It’s part of our identity.”
Parents also raised concerns about the cost of participating at other schools, where fees for sports equipment and practice gear can reach over $1,000—something that may be prohibitive for some families.
“Even if we get our kids there, can they afford the equipment? Will they feel out of place?” asked Katlynne Maldonado, the mother of a Holt cheerleader. “We want them to thrive, not feel self-conscious.”
In order to give the community the opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts on the decision, TCSS has scheduled a meeting for parents and students on Monday at 6 PM at Holt High School. School officials will explain the decision and address concerns.
Brewer reassured families that coaches and teaching positions at Holt will remain intact, and opportunities for students to participate in extracurricular activities will continue.
“Our focus is on giving students the best chance at success,” said Brewer. “Varsity sports may be moving, but Holt High School remains strong.”
