Tuberville’s hard-fought battle against military abortion travel policy ends in vindication after Trump DoD issues official reversal

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville made a multiyear stand against a Department of Defense practice instituted by former President Biden’s administration, purposing taxpayers’ money to fund travel for military members and their family members seeking an abortion if they reside in a state with restrictions on the procedure.

Part of Tuberville’s efforts included imposing a procedural hold on senior military promotions to protest the policy, which was demonized by Biden, Democrats, and the mainstream media throughout 2023.

However, on Wednesday, Tuberville ultimately won the war after Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, under the direction of President Trump, issued a memorandum officially reversing the policy.

“For the past two years, I have been sounding the alarm about the Pentagon’s illegal and immoral practice of using taxpayer dollars to fund abortions,” Tuberville (R-Auburn) said.

“I took a lot of heat when I stood alone for nearly a year in holding senior Pentagon promotions over this—but as of today, it was all worth it. The Biden administration treated taxpayers like their own personal Piggy bank that they could use to bankroll their woke agenda. President Trump and Secretary Hegseth affirmed today what I’ve been fighting for since I got to Washington: zero taxpayer dollars should go toward abortions. Under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth’s leadership, the Pentagon will once again be focused on lethality, not pushing a political agenda.”

“Thank God common sense has been restored to our military under President Trump’s leadership.”

The policy permitting taxpayer-funded travel for those seeking abortions was announced in October 2022 by former Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Tuberville first threatened to place the holds on hundreds of  Defense Department nominations in response to the policy in December 2022 in a letter addressed to Austin.

On multiple occasions, Tuberville took to the floor to defend his position on keeping the holds in place after being attacked by both Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and even fellow Republican Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Todd Young (R-Ind), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), and Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska).

In December of 2023, following threats from Senator Schumer to change Senate rules, Tuberville narrowed the holds to 4-star generals, releasing the other nominees for promotion.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth under President Trump, now in charge of the Pentagon, had Sen. Tuberville in mind after the memo was issued, posting on Friday, “Thank you for your leadership, Coach.”
